How to Read a Perfume Label: Top, Middle & Base Notes

What you smell when you first try a perfume is completely different from what you smell 6 hours later. The note pyramid is behind this transformation.

Top Notes

These are the notes that reach your nose first. Usually citrus, lightly spiced or green in character, they evaporate within 15-30 minutes. Top notes create the first impression but aren't the essence that represents 'you'.

Heart Notes

Also known as middle notes, this group defines the character of the perfume. They can be floral, spicy or fruity and last 2-4 hours on the skin. The 'personality' of the perfume is hidden here.

Base Notes

These are the notes that last the longest and determine the depth and longevity of the perfume. Vetiver, cedar, sandalwood, amber, musk and oud frequently appear here. A good base ensures the scent leaves a trace that still surrounds you hours later.

To truly test a perfume: apply to your wrists and wait 30 minutes. What you smell after that is your scent.
